Why WordPress is the best CMS for NZ SEO

WordPress gives you more SEO control than any other platform. Unlike Shopify or Squarespace, you own everything: full URL structure control, complete robots.txt customisation, server-side rendering, unlimited schema markup options, code-level optimisation, and your choice of hosting location. This flexibility is why our website guide recommends WordPress for most NZ service businesses and content-heavy sites.

The trade-off: more control means more responsibility. A badly configured WordPress site can actively sabotage your rankings - slow speeds from too many plugins, security vulnerabilities from outdated software, or a single checkbox that blocks Google entirely. This guide shows you how to set up WordPress for SEO success from day one, even if you've never touched a line of code.

The one setting that can make your site invisible

Check this right now - it takes 3 seconds

Go to Settings → Reading in your WordPress dashboard. Find the checkbox that says "Discourage search engines from indexing this site." Make sure it is UNCHECKED.

This checkbox is often left checked from development (developers use it to hide unfinished sites from Google) and never unchecked at launch. It completely blocks your entire site from appearing in Google. It is the single most devastating WordPress SEO mistake - and it's a single checkbox. Check it now before reading another word of this guide.

Rank Math vs Yoast: the honest comparison

Every WordPress site needs exactly one SEO plugin. In 2026, the choice comes down to Rank Math or Yoast. After testing both extensively on NZ client sites, our recommendation is clear: Rank Math (free version).

The verdict is straightforward: Rank Math's free version includes redirect management, 20+ schema types, 5 focus keywords per page, Search Console integration, and local SEO - features that Yoast charges $150 - $280/year for across multiple premium add-ons. Unless you're deeply invested in Yoast's ecosystem and don't want to migrate, Rank Math is the better choice for NZ businesses in 2026.

Rank Math includes a one-click migration tool that imports all your existing SEO titles, meta descriptions, focus keywords, and redirects. The switch takes under 5 minutes.

Essential WordPress SEO settings (step by step)

1. Permalinks (critical)

Go to Settings → Permalinks. Select "Post name." This creates clean, readable URLs like yoursite.co.nz/plumber-auckland/ instead of yoursite.co.nz/?p=123. Clean URLs are a minor ranking signal, but more importantly they're clickable and shareable - which indirectly improves SEO through better engagement.

Warning: if changing permalinks on an existing site with indexed pages, you must set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones. Rank Math's redirect manager handles this automatically.

2. XML sitemap

Rank Math generates your sitemap automatically at yoursite.co.nz/sitemap_index.xml. Submit it to Google Search Console: go to Search Console → Sitemaps → enter "sitemap_index.xml" → click Submit. This tells Google where all your important pages are.

3. Homepage meta title and description

Your homepage title is often the first thing searchers see. The WordPress default is usually generic - change it in Rank Math's SEO settings. Apply the on-page checklist rules: primary keyword, location, and benefit within 60 characters. Example: "Auckland Plumber - 24/7 Emergency Repairs | Smith Plumbing."

4. Categories and tags

Use categories for main content groupings - name them after searchable keywords (e.g., "Plumbing Tips" not "Blog"). Use tags sparingly or not at all. Empty tag archive pages dilute your SEO. In Rank Math, set tags to "noindex" unless they serve a genuine navigation purpose: Rank Math → Titles & Meta → Tags → toggle "No Index" on.

5. Noindex low-value pages

Author archives (on single-author sites), date archives, and tag archives usually contain duplicate content that wastes Google's crawl budget. In Rank Math: go to Titles & Meta and set author archives, date archives, and tags to "noindex." This keeps Google focused on your valuable content.

"

If you've never touched your WordPress SEO settings 'there's a good chance Google is wasting time crawling pages that don't matter while missing the ones that do.'

I'll audit your full WordPress configuration in 15 minutes and tell you exactly what to change. Most fixes are toggling a setting - no code, no developer, no cost.

Speed optimisation for NZ WordPress sites

WordPress sites are notorious for being slow - but that's poor configuration, not the platform. A well-optimised WordPress site loads faster than Shopify, Squarespace, or Wix. The issue is that most NZ WordPress sites have 30+ active plugins, uncompressed images, and no caching.

Caching (the single biggest speed win)

Install a caching plugin. This serves pre-built versions of your pages instead of generating them fresh for every visitor. WP Rocket (~$80 NZD/year) is the best option - it handles page caching, browser caching, CSS/JS minification, and lazy loading in one plugin. LiteSpeed Cache (free) is excellent if your host runs LiteSpeed servers. This single plugin can cut load times by 40-60%.

Image compression

Images are the heaviest element on most WordPress pages. Install ShortPixel or Imagify to auto-compress uploads to WebP format. Aim for every image under 200KB. This alone can improve your LCP score by 1-2 seconds.

Plugin audit

Every active plugin adds PHP processing time, database queries, and JavaScript. The more plugins, the slower your site. Audit quarterly: deactivate any plugin you're not actively using, then delete it. Deactivating alone isn't enough - the code remains. Aim for under 20 active plugins. The 7-plugin stack later in this guide covers everything most NZ sites need.

NZ hosting: why it matters for WordPress

This is the most impactful speed decision for NZ WordPress sites. Popular US-based hosts (GoDaddy, Bluehost, SiteGround US) serve your site from American data centres, adding 200-400ms of latency for every NZ visitor. That's before any content loads. Read our technical SEO guide for the full explanation of why this matters for rankings.

NZ WordPress hostFrom (NZD/mo)LocationBest for
SiteHost$25AucklandManaged WordPress, most NZ businesses
Catalyst Cloud$30WellingtonTechnical users, custom setups
Cloudways (Sydney) + Cloudflare$20Sydney + CDNBudget option with near-NZ speed
At minimum:

Add Cloudflare's free CDN to whatever host you have now. It caches your site on servers in Auckland and Sydney, reducing load times for NZ visitors by 30-50%. Setup takes 15 minutes and costs nothing. Full hosting comparison in our website guide.

Themes that help (and themes that hurt) SEO

Your WordPress theme has a direct impact on speed and, therefore, rankings. Heavy themes generate excessive HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that slows every page - and no caching plugin can fully compensate for a bloated theme.

Fast, SEO-friendly themes: GeneratePress, Kadence, and Astra are purpose-built for speed. They generate minimal code, support full customisation, and load in under 1 second with proper hosting. All three have free versions that are sufficient for most NZ businesses.

Themes to reconsider: Elementor, Divi, and WPBakery are visual page builders that generate significantly more JavaScript than lightweight themes. They're popular because they're easy to design with, but the performance trade-off is measurable - higher INP scores, slower load times, and lower PageSpeed scores. If your site is built on a heavy page builder and your mobile PageSpeed score is under 50, the theme may be the root cause.

Security basics that protect your rankings

WordPress security directly affects SEO. A hacked site gets flagged by Google with a "This site may be hacked" warning in search results - instantly killing your click-through rate and potentially getting your site deindexed.

  • Keep everything updated. WordPress core, themes, and plugins. Outdated software is the #1 attack vector. Enable auto-updates for minor releases
  • Use strong, unique passwords. And enable two-factor authentication for all admin accounts
  • Install a security plugin. Wordfence (free) provides a firewall, malware scanner, and login security. It's the most popular security plugin for good reason
  • Regular backups. UpdraftPlus (free) automates backups to Google Drive or Dropbox. If something goes wrong, you can restore in minutes instead of rebuilding from scratch

The 7-plugin stack for NZ WordPress sites

These 7 plugins cover SEO, speed, security, backups, forms, and analytics. That's all most NZ WordPress sites need. Resist the urge to install 30+ plugins - each one you add slows your site and increases risk.

Creating content that ranks

WordPress is the best platform for content-driven SEO because of its powerful blog and flexible page templates. To make content that actually ranks:

Use Rank Math's content analysis. Every post and page gets a score based on on-page SEO factors: keyword usage, heading structure, internal links, image optimisation, and readability. Aim for 80+/100 on each post. Don't chase a perfect 100 — write for humans first, then refine based on Rank Math's suggestions.

Internal link every post. Every new blog post should link to 3–5 related posts and service pages. Use descriptive anchor text: "Read our local SEO guide" not "click here." Rank Math's internal link suggestions feature shows which pages are relevant to link to as you write.

Add FAQ schema. Add an FAQ section to every blog post and service page. Rank Math generates FAQ schema automatically when you use its FAQ block — this can trigger expandable FAQ dropdowns directly in Google search results, dramatically increasing your SERP real estate.

Target NZ-specific keywords. Use NZ spelling ("optimise" not "optimize"), NZ terminology ("tradies" not "contractors"), and NZ locations. Follow our complete NZ keyword research process to find the right terms.

6 WordPress SEO mistakes NZ businesses make

1. The "discourage search engines" checkbox

Left checked from development, this single checkbox blocks your entire site from Google. Check Settings → Reading right now.

2. Default permalinks

WordPress defaults to /?p=123 URLs. Change to "Post name" for clean, keyword-rich URLs. If changing on an existing site, set up 301 redirects.

3. Too many plugins

30+ active plugins means slow speeds, security risks, and conflicts. Audit quarterly, remove anything unused. The 7-plugin stack in this guide is all you need.

4. No caching plugin

WordPress without caching regenerates every page from scratch for every visitor. WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache takes 10 minutes to install and can halve your load time.

5. US hosting

The single biggest speed mistake for NZ WordPress sites. US hosting adds 200-400ms of invisible latency. Switch to NZ hosting or add Cloudflare CDN. See our NZ hosting section for specifics.

6. Never updating WordPress, themes, or plugins

Outdated software is the #1 cause of WordPress hacks. A hacked site gets flagged by Google and loses rankings overnight. Enable auto-updates and check manually monthly.
